Brief history

Brief History of Patrick and Bridget McIntyre

Patrick McIntyre (c1831-1901) married Bridget Stevens (c1829-1908) on March 3, 1851 in St. Attracta’s Roman Catholic Church, Toulestrane, County Sligo, Ireland. They had eleven known children. The first five were born in Ireland: Edward (1852-1931); Bartholomew (1854-1924); Mary (1856-1934); Dominick (c1860-1932); and Catherine (1861-1914). Patrick, his wife and five children, left Ireland in 1863 sailing on the SS Orient into New York harbor and finally settling in San Francisco, California where the last six children were born: John Dunn (1864-a1908); Elizabeth (1867-1869); William (1869-1879); James (1871-1874); Thomas (c1874-a1931); and Ellen (1879-1963). Patrick and Bridget homesteaded in Oregon in the 1880s. Patrick died in 1901 and Bridget died in 1908. They are both buried in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Portland, Oregon.

Patrick's parents, Edward (c1805/6-1881) and Ann McIntyre (c1803/07-1889), both born in Ireland, also came to the US settling in the San Francisco area. From the records, it appears Edward and Ann came a few years before Patrick.

Richard M. McIntyre 1943-2019 Remembered

In an effort to learn more about his family, Richard did an autosomal DNA testing at Ancestry.com. In the fall of 2018, Sal Bigone, who also had tested at Ancestry.com, noticed the rather close McIntyre match in his results and contacted Richard. Sal said they had a wonderful one hour telephone conversation. Sal then shared this information with the cousins. Over the next several months Richard communicated via telephone and email with a number of the cousins, sharing his genealogical information with many of us. Elaine added this information to her database and for those deceased individuals in Richard's family, that information now appears on www.McIntyreGenealogy.com.

Richard knew the name, Bartholomew McIntyre, as his grandfather, but didn't know the name of his grandmother. Through information received from Marina, it was known that Richard's father, Anthony, was the child of Bartholomew McIntyre (1854-1924) and Paula Calderone (1887-?). This was shared with Richard.

Richard kindly sent photos of himself to Elaine who, at Richard's request, scanned them and sent the images to a number of  the cousins. Since Richard picked out these photos as representative of his life, we know they meant a lot to him. Here are a couple of the pictures he sent.

Boot camp, 1962

Medical cruise, 1963

Sitting at the piano, 1994

Security officer, 2005
Richard also took a 37 marker Y-DNA test for Elaine on FamilyTreeDNA in the spring of 2019. When the results came back, he and Elaine's paternal uncle, Thomas McIntyre, were a match, with only a one marker difference. Since then, Elaine's brother Larry, has taken the 111Y-DNA test at FamilyTreeDNA and he too matches Richard at a one marker difference. These tests prove Richard's McIntyre family which can be traced up through Edward McIntyre (c1806-1881), the father of Patrick McIntyre, and Michael McIntyre (c1805-1891), Elaine's 2nd great grandfather, were most likely brothers. If this is true, then we all share the common ancestry of the parents of Edward and Michael.  Thank you Richard for "tying" our families together with your DNA.

Richard Martin McIntyre, the son of Anthony Patrick McIntyre (1909-1986) and Dorothy Nell Stein (1917-2000), was born in San Mateo County, California on October 6, 1943. He married Alta Lee Neal and they had one son. He lived his final years in Las Vegas, Nevada where he died on September 16, 2019. RIP.
