Brief history

Brief History of Patrick and Bridget McIntyre

Patrick McIntyre (c1831-1901) married Bridget Stevens (c1829-1908) on March 3, 1851 in St. Attracta’s Roman Catholic Church, Toulestrane, County Sligo, Ireland. They had eleven known children. The first five were born in Ireland: Edward (1852-1931); Bartholomew (1854-1924); Mary (1856-1934); Dominick (c1860-1932); and Catherine (1861-1914). Patrick, his wife and five children, left Ireland in 1863 sailing on the SS Orient into New York harbor and finally settling in San Francisco, California where the last six children were born: John Dunn (1864-a1908); Elizabeth (1867-1869); William (1869-1879); James (1871-1874); Thomas (c1874-a1931); and Ellen (1879-1963). Patrick and Bridget homesteaded in Oregon in the 1880s. Patrick died in 1901 and Bridget died in 1908. They are both buried in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Portland, Oregon.

Patrick's parents, Edward (c1805/6-1881) and Ann McIntyre (c1803/07-1889), both born in Ireland, also came to the US settling in the San Francisco area. From the records, it appears Edward and Ann came a few years before Patrick.

James McIntyre, Possible Son? Verified, August 2014.

In Bridget Stevens McIntyre's obituary, it states she had 13 children.  Ten of her children are accounted for in various documents and censuses.  In searching the San Francisco Genealogy website where they have added transcriptions and images of the register of Calvary Cemetery, San Francisco, and interments in Holy Cross Cemetery, in Colma, California, a James McIntyre has been identified who may possibly be a son of Bridget and Patrick.

Cemetery Removal Card

Mt. Calvary Cemetery Register, Vol II, page 185, Line 28, #17555

Argument for James being the son of Bridget and Patrick:

1. There were no other children of a Patrick and Bridget McIntyre/McIntire  listed in the Mt. Calvary Cemetery that are not already attributed to "our" Patrick and Bridget.  Additionally, any other "children" of a Patrick McIntyre (without wife identified) were buried in much different locations.

2. Even though James was "buried" in Dormitory 3 -- and the rest of Patrick and Bridget's children are listed in Dormitory 1 -- the remainder of the information for all individuals is exactly the same, i.e., Station 76, Area 3, Grave 3,4,5,6.  It is a very unlikely coincidence that two Patrick and Bridget McIntyres would have children buried in exactly the same spot in two different "Dormitories."  I did check the actual image of the cemetery register book [above] and it definitely says Dormitory 3, so it wasn't a typo on the removal card.  But, it could have been an error on the register entry.

3. The Patrick and Bridget, parents of James, are from San Francisco as noted on the registry.
4. James fits perfectly into the Patrick and Bridget family,  If he was born c April, 1871, that would be almost exactly 2 years after William was born (28 Mar 1869) and somewhere around two to three years before Thomas was born (c1874).

Of course, the above doesn't prove James is the child of Patrick and Bridget, but I find the entry regarding where the original burial was located in Mt. Calvary, rather compelling.

The children born just prior to James were baptized at St. Bridget's Church in San Francisco.  The baptismal records for St. Bridget's should be checked to see if James was baptized there and, if so, who were the sponsors. This might shed more light on who James is.

In August, 2014, a death notice for James was located in the San Francisco Examiner, December 26, 1874, p. 3
"In this city, December 25th, James, son of Patrick and Bridget McIntyre, aged 3 years, 7 months and 28 days."
