Brief History of Patrick and Bridget McIntyre

Patrick McIntyre (c1831-1901) married Bridget Stevens (c1829-1908) on March 3, 1851 in St. Attracta’s Roman Catholic Church, Toulestrane, County Sligo, Ireland. They had eleven known children. The first five were born in Ireland: Edward (1852-1931); Bartholomew (1854-1924); Mary (1856-1934); Dominick (c1860-1932); and Catherine (1861-1914). Patrick, his wife and five children, left Ireland in 1863 sailing on the SS Orient into New York harbor and finally settling in San Francisco, California where the last six children were born: John Dunn (1864-a1908); Elizabeth (1867-1869); William (1869-1879); James (1871-1874); Thomas (c1874-a1931); and Ellen (1879-1963). Patrick and Bridget homesteaded in Oregon in the 1880s. Patrick died in 1901 and Bridget died in 1908. They are both buried in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Portland, Oregon.

Patrick's parents, Edward (c1805/6-1881) and Ann McIntyre (c1803/07-1889), both born in Ireland, also came to the US settling in the San Francisco area. From the records, it appears Edward and Ann came a few years before Patrick.

Samuel and Bridget (McIntyre) Smith, 1855 New York State Census

Patrick, in his "Information Wanted" inquiry, is looking for his sister Bridget McIntyre who married Samuel Smith and lived in New York State.

Dolly Purcell found this 1855 New York State Census which might be the correct couple. Unfortunately, at this time, no later censuses with Samuel and Bridget Smith can be located to attempt to verify the relationship.

1855 New York State Census; Northern Block, 8th District; Sixteenth Ward, New York City; 19 June 1955

Samuel Smith, 30, Male, born Ireland, married, 22 years residence in New York, Sadler, naturalized citizen
Bridget Smith, 30, Female, Wife, born in Ireland, married, 10 years residence in New York, Over 21 years of age cannot read or write

Notes:

  • A sadler is a maker of saddles.
  • In the 1855 New York State Census, Bridget's father states he has been in New York for 7 years. This Bridget states 10 years.
  • Have not been able to locate a Samuel and Bridget Smith in later censuses.
  • Although it is possible this is the Bridget Smith that Patrick McIntyre identifies in his 1863 "Information Wanted" inquiry, it is not yet proof.
  • Of note, many adults in the New York City 1855 census seem to have their ages rounded to 30, 45, 60, etc.
  • Also, this Samuel Smith states he was born in Ireland. Patrick believed he was an American born citizen. However, if he lived in the United States for 22 years, Bridget may had represented Samuel as such when she wrote about him.
